Oakland teachers could strike on May 1
Briefly

The Oakland Education Association is voting until April 25 on whether to authorize a strike against Oakland Unified School District over recent budget cuts. Allegations of ignored requests for financial information drive this action as the union seeks to mitigate the impact on teachers' jobs. The vote coincides with uncertain school district leadership, particularly concerning Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell's contract. This follows a recent successful strike in 2023 that secured significant raises for OEA members.
We have had a host of different back-and-forths with the district and the county to try to get as much information as we could to be prepared to bargain.
The strike vote comes at a time when the district is facing some uncertainty in leadership.
