By May 7, 2025, New Yorkers are required to present either a REAL ID or Enhanced ID to board domestic flights and access certain federal buildings. In preparation for this deadline, the New York State DMV has expanded service hours to Saturdays from April 5 through June 28, making it easier for residents to obtain or upgrade their identification. Appointments must be made in advance, as the new regulations stem from the federal REAL ID Act aimed at enhancing security standards for state-issued IDs established after 9/11.
By May 7, 2025, all New Yorkers must acquire a REAL ID or Enhanced ID, as these are required for domestic flights and federal access without a passport.
The DMV is extending services before the May federal deadline, opening Saturday mornings to help New Yorkers obtain or upgrade their REAL IDs and Enhanced IDs.
