Following controversy over a newsletter that described Israel's actions as genocide, NYC Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos has mandated that all mass communications must receive her approval before distribution. The decision comes after backlash from the Jewish community regarding politically charged content. Aviles-Ramos apologized and emphasized the need for politically neutral materials. A directive was also issued halting all newsletters and communications from the Department of Education until further notice, reflecting a broader aim to ensure respect and sensitivity in messaging.
Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos stated, "It is egregious and deeply disappointing that politically one-sided materials that are deeply offensive to the Jewish community were once again shared with educators."
Aviles-Ramos added, "Moving forward, all system-wide communication will be directly signed off by my office until weâ¦reflect our core values and the highest commitment to curating materials that ONLY reflect political neutrality."
