NYC launching free child care for some municipal workers this fall
""We never want city workers to have to choose between a job that they love and raising their kids in the family in the city that they call home," Mamdani said during a press conference Monday."
"Former Mayor Eric Adams first announced the pilot program in October, but Mamdani said he's adding $2.3 million in operating funds to the program and making every employee who works in the building eligible."
"Parents will be notified in June and those who don't receive one of the 40 slots will be placed on a wait list."
"The program will be located on the ground floor of the North Tower and is currently undergoing a $10 million renovation."
The Mamdani administration is initiating a free child care pilot program for municipal employees with young children, starting this fall at the David N. Dinkins building. All 2,000 employees in the building and Department of Citywide Administrative Services employees can apply. The program aims to alleviate the burden of choosing between work and family. It includes $2.3 million in operating funds and expands eligibility beyond administrative services workers. Applications open on April 30, with care provided year-round from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., unlike existing preschool programs.
