New Jersey library gets book returned 99 years late
Briefly

Mary Cooper returned a library book borrowed by her grandfather in 1926, exactly 99 years late. The book, titled "Home-Made Toys for Girls and Boys," was stamped by the Ocean County Library and was due for return in March 1926, shortly before her grandfather's passing. Cooper felt it was necessary to return the book, coinciding with the library's 100th anniversary celebration. While it would have amassed over $18,000 in late fees, late fines are no longer enforced. The book will now be displayed at the library's Toms River branch.
"I said, I have to return this book to the library. I was sure they would like to have it back."
The return of the book generated curiosity, excitement, and sentimentality regarding the centennial.
