A Brooklyn mother was sentenced to life in prison after admitting to drowning and killing her three children in the ocean at Coney Island on September 12, 2022. She brought the children to the beach early in the morning, drowned them, and then left their bodies on the shore. She later walked to nearby Brighton Beach barefoot and wearing a bathrobe. The children’s father and other family members reported them missing, and authorities found the children the next morning. They were pronounced dead upon arrival at Coney Island Hospital. The mother pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in March 2026, following murder charges filed in October 2022. Reports cited severe mental health struggles and rent and eviction issues, and family members referenced possible postpartum depression.
"Erin Merdy, 34, was found guilty of drowning 7-year-old Zachary Merdy, 4-year-old Liliana Stephens Merdy, and 3-month-old Oliver Bondarev in the ocean after bringing them to the beach near where they lived in the early hours of the morning. After drowning the children, Merdy wandered down to nearby Brighton Beach, barefoot and in her bathrobe, leaving the three kids' bodies on the shore."
"The kids' father and other family members called the police to report that both she and the children were missing. Authorities located the children the following morning, and they were pronounced dead as soon as they reached Coney Island Hospital."
"Merdy was indicted on murder charges on Thursday, October 6, 2022. Merdy pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in March 2026."
"Reports indicate Merdy had struggled with severe mental health problems and owed $10,000 in rent for the apartment she shared with her children. Records also reveal she had been served with an eviction notice at the time. Other reports from that night say she argued with the children's father over custody before taking the children to the iconic beach."
