Parent advocates from Elmont High School are urging local sports authorities to exclude schools from the Bellmore-Merrick district from their athletic schedule due to ongoing race-related issues. After a girls basketball game incident where only a Black Elmont player faced suspension, tensions escalated, prompting calls for change. During a meeting with Nassau County officials, parents expressed long-standing frustrations and concluded that urgent action was necessary to protect their students from discriminatory behavior observed in the rival district's sporting events.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Something different has to be done. And someone needs to be courageous enough to stand on business.
The incident provided enough fuel to make them want to redress the history of problems between the districts. The parents are demanding that Bellmore-Merrick schools be kept off its high school's athletic schedule.
