A recent radar outage at Newark Liberty International Airport led to chaos among air traffic controllers and heightened operational challenges due to staffing shortages. United Airlines has even recommended that passengers avoid the airport as a result of ongoing delays and cancellations. A particular outage on April 28 caused air traffic controllers to lose radio and radar contact for about 30 seconds, leading to trauma leave for at least five controllers. While the outage didn't cause accidents, released audio depicted the chaotic communications between controllers and pilots during this time.
Although the brief blackout didn't result in any accidents, newly released audio obtained by CNN showed just how chaotic the moment became when a controller couldn't find the plane whose pilot he was talking to.
