Dylan Lopez Contreras, a 20-year-old Bronx high school student, spoke publicly following his detention by immigration authorities, expressing frustration over his wrongful arrest and gratitude for the support he received. He emphasized his longing to return home to continue his studies and reunite with his family. As a Venezuelan student under a humanitarian program, Dylan's case highlights recent aggressive immigration enforcement tactics. His detention marks a troubling trend under the current administration, raising awareness of the impacts on students and families in the Bronx and beyond.
It's frustrating to be here knowing that I didn't do anything wrong," Dylan said in Spanish, according to a translation provided by his attorneys at the New York Legal Assistance Group.
All I want is to go home so I can continue studying, to see the people who I love, and to be free," he added.
I can't wait to hug you tightly and watch movies together again," he said, addressing his siblings.
Dylan's arrest was a high-profile early example of an aggressive new immigration enforcement tactic under President Donald Trump.
