Hearing Set To Determine DNA Admissibility in Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Case

A hearing to assess the admissibility of DNA evidence in the Rex Heuermann case is set for March 28. Involved are defense and prosecution witnesses discussing DNA links to seven murdered women, particularly criticizing the nuclear DNA evidence from Astrea Labs. Defense attorneys question the reliability of this relatively new forensic science as it has not been widely accepted, except in one past cold case in Idaho. Prosecutors argue that Heuermann's DNA connects to six victims, with additional evidence supporting the case.
"This new science, we don't believe it's science in this realm, in the forensic criminal field realm," Brown said. "This Astrea corporation ... has never been accepted in any forensic setting."
