After a tragic incident in Hyde Park, where 5-year-old Lens Arthur Joseph was killed by a school bus, the community has rallied to improve pedestrian safety. A fundraiser for Joseph's family has raised over $27,000, reflecting the community’s support. Local leaders, including Councilor Enrique J. Pepén, are advocating for faster implementation of traffic-calming measures in high-risk areas. A planned vigil for Joseph's family was postponed, and further community safety discussions are scheduled to ensure that streets are safer for children and vulnerable residents.
In his short 5 years of life Lens already had so many big dreams for himself and an imagination beyond his years. Lens was a beautiful, curious, and intelligent boy taken from us too soon.
My heart goes out to the family impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy in Hyde Park. It’s imperative we enhance traffic safety measures to protect our children.
I'm looking forward to working alongside my colleagues to make sure that all of our residents, especially our youngest ones, our most vulnerable, are safe on our streets.
Councilor Enrique J. Pepén is committed to rapidly expand traffic-calming measures like speed humps, signage, and crosswalks, particularly in high-risk areas.
