A wildfire in New Jersey threatened more than 1,300 structures, prompting the evacuation of around 3,000 residents. Fortunately, evacuation orders have since been lifted, and a major highway has reopened. The fire impacted an area in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area, burning over 13 square miles. Although fire officials reported that it was only about 10% contained, the recent rains had helped dampen the region following a period of severe drought. At least 25,000 customers lost power as a precaution for crew safety during firefighting efforts.
"The fire in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area burned more than 13 square miles of land, fire officials said. The blaze… was only about 10% contained Tuesday night."
"Forest fires are a common occurrence in the Pine Barrens, a 1.1 million-acre state and federally protected reserve about the size of the Grand Canyon lying halfway between Philadelphia to the west and the Atlantic coast to the east."
