A Bronx daycare owner, Grei Mendez, was sentenced to 45 years in prison for her role in a tragic incident where a one-year-old boy, Nicholas Feliz Dominici, died from fentanyl exposure. The drugs had been stored underneath the daycare's floor tiles, posing a grave threat to the children. Nicholas's grieving mother, Zoila Dominici, expressed her deep anguish in court, stating that no amount of time served could justify the loss of her son. Prosecutors argued Mendez was responsible for not administering necessary rescue medication, underscoring her negligence.
"It is not possible to forgive something like this," Zoila Dominici told a trembling Grei Mendez in Manhattan federal court of the tragic September 2023 death of Nicholas Feliz Dominici.
"Forty-five years is not enough," Dominici said in court Monday. "I do not forgive you," Dominici added to Mendez, who appeared overcome with emotion.
"She had the key to helping these children and she didn't use it," federal prosecutor Maggie Lynaugh said.
Mendez didn't administer the rescue medication Narcan on the children despite having a kit in the facility's daycare cabinet.
