Jonathan Braun, a convicted drug dealer whose sentence was commuted by President Trump, was sent back to jail after violating the terms of his release. Braun faced multiple charges, including injuring a three-year-old and groping his nanny, following a series of violent incidents in Nassau County. Judge Matsumoto expressed serious concerns over Braun's demeanor and violent behavior, highlighting ongoing harm to others. Braun's reoffending raises questions about the implications of clemency during Trump's administration, particularly regarding violent crimes.
"I am concerned about the nature of the offenses. People are getting hurt," Matsumoto said at a hearing in Brooklyn federal court.
Trump commuted Braun's decade-long sentence for orchestrating a marijuana distribution ring in the waning days of his first term in 2021.
Braun was nabbed several times since, including for allegedly punching a man during a Shabbat dinner Saturday night at his Nassau County home.
Judge Kiyo A. Matsumoto cited Braun's alleged spree of 'erratic' violent episodes and held him without bail for breaching the terms of his supervised release.
