Coming home: Dylan Lopez Contreras' emotional return and reunion with family in Manhattan after 10 months in ICE detention | amNewYork
"I want to thank everyone who doesn't forget about the people that are still in there. Because as happy as I am that I'm free and I'm out here, I'm still sad that there are people still in there unjustly that deserve to be free as well. I wish I had the opportunity to bring them all with me."
"He was put in detention for nearly a year, and he was robbed of what should have been his. Because, above all, he is a young man who deserves to be in school, to be with his family, and to have his future ahead of him."
Dylan Lopez Contreras, a NYC high school student, was released after 10 months of ICE detention under the second Trump administration. He was welcomed home at Middle Collegiate Church in the East Village by Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, along with advocates and supporters. Despite his release, Contreras was fitted with an ankle monitor by the Department of Homeland Security and must continue his pending asylum case. He expressed gratitude for his freedom while remaining concerned about others still detained by ICE. His mother, Raiza Contreras, thanked supporters for their advocacy efforts throughout his detention.
