Brooklyn Museum Pauses Layoffs, But Workers Not Out of the Woods
Briefly

The Brooklyn Museum has paused planned layoffs after securing an additional $100,000 from New York City alongside voluntary separation packages accepted by 27 staff members. However, Director Anne Pasternak cautioned that without confirmed funding for the next fiscal year, layoffs might still occur by June 30, 2025. Unions and supporters resisted earlier plans to cut 47 jobs amid a $10 million deficit, advocating for alternatives like voluntary separations. The museum seeks to strike a balance between necessary cuts and strategic investments while continuing discussions about its financial future.
District Council 37 Executive Director Henry A. Garrido said at the City Council hearing that there is no reason why 47 people should be losing their jobs until we exhaust everything possible, emphasizing the need for thorough exploration of alternatives prior to layoffs.
Brooklyn Museum Director Anne Pasternak mentioned the need for additional funding in future discussions, stating that if such funding does not materialize, unfortunately, the museum will need to move ahead with previously planned reductions by June 30, 2025.
