At NYCHA's Hammel Houses, Residents Wait for Sandy-Damaged Community Center to Reopen

The Community Center in Hammel Houses has remained closed since Superstorm Sandy in 2012 due to severe flooding that damaged key facilities. Residents, including Tyra-Jasmine Boisson, recall fond memories of the center, which provided recreational activities and community gatherings. Although NYCHA has invested $184 million in improvements over the past decade, the center's reopening is delayed due to ongoing repairs, particularly to the HVAC system. Restoration of the basketball court is expected to be completed in spring 2024, but no timeline for the HVAC replacement has been provided.
