A protest at Barnard College saw approximately 200 individuals, including students from Columbia University and nearby institutions, stage a disruptive demonstration, leading to nine arrests. The protest included aggressive anti-Israel chants and resulted in a fake bomb threat that necessitated the evacuation of the Milstein Library. Officials from Columbia University are reviewing disciplinary actions against four of their arrested students. The protests have escalated in rhetoric, reflecting tension around the campus community related to current global issues.
The demonstration echoed a similar campus building takeover at Barnard last week, but this time the group ratcheted up their rhetoric, hanging an Old West-style "wanted" poster of Dean of Students Leslie Grinage and even a shoddy effigy of the school's president, Laura Rosenbury.
We have been notified that four Columbia students were arrested as part of yesterday's disruption at Barnard's Milstein Library and we are working swiftly through our discipline process. We regret that members of our community participated in this unacceptable disruption at Barnard.
