Megan Mainzer, who assists homeless children and families in Rhode Island's Middletown Public Schools, benefits from federal funding via the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Last year, her district received $65,000, facilitating essential services like food pantries and transportation. However, a proposed budget under the Trump administration threatens these funds, suggesting substantial cuts and merging programs into a single block grant. Mainzer expresses concern that this uncertainty compromises the resources needed to support the vulnerable student population effectively.
Under the proposal, schools would not be required to spend this money on resources for students experiencing homelessness.
Mainzer says, if the proposal is approved by Congress, her work will continue 'but I won't have the same resources that I do right now.'
