A tragic incident occurred at a shelter in East Flatbush where a 4-year-old child was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. Police discovered bruising on the child’s body along with drugs present at the scene. Despite efforts to revive the child using Narcan, they were unsuccessful. The child’s parents were questioned, but no arrests have been made. Residents expressed shock and sorrow, questioning the presence of drugs in the shelter's environment. Investigations are underway by both the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Department of Social Services.
"It's sad because why do you have that in the presence of a child or in here, period," said one resident, who declined to be identified.
"This shelter provides for families like myself," Correa said. "This is the first time I've heard about this kind of situation. It's very sad."
