Every year, the Rockettes, New York City's famous precision dance troupe, hold an open call audition attracting around 1,000 hopefuls from all over the country. Among them is Alyssa Gallagher, who reflects on her patience and perseverance after ten auditions. The origins of the Rockettes date back to 1925 in St. Louis, where precision dance first emerged as an art form. Their renowned Christmas Spectacular has evolved but their legacy continues at Radio City Music Hall, showcasing their historical and cultural significance in entertainment.
"The whole journey has been long, but I've been patient and I'm continuing to go for my dream," said Alyssa Gallagher, who is auditioning for the 10th time.
"These ideas of industrialization were really prevalent. And so, how do we do things mechanically organized in unison? That was a novelty and still is," said Adrienne Gibbons Oehlers.
"When John D. Rockefeller built Radio City Music Hall, he wanted it to be so opulent that even Great Depression audiences would come see a show," highlighting the venue's historical significance.
"The first Christmas Spectacular debuted in 1933, but unlike the present day, the Rockettes also performed year-round as part of a variety show before movies," revealing their versatile performance history.
