New York Sign Museum Rescues Signs
Briefly

The New York Sign Museum, founded in 2019 by David Barnett and Mac Pohanka, features a collection of historical signs from churches, drugstores, and more. Located at 2465 Atlantic Avenue, the museum originally stemmed from the co-owners' passion for sign making after salvaging iconic signs in New York City. Despite being a nonprofit with funding challenges, the museum connects visitors to the rich art and history of signage through curated tours and special events, emphasizing the importance of preservation and appreciation for this often-overlooked craft.
"We split my time between the New York Sign Museum and a record store in Greenpoint. I actually don't have any signage background, just an education in library science/archiving and a great appreciation for both art and NYC history."
"The first one came from the Lower East Side. We found the church signs in the trash in Bed Stuy and a drugstore neon sign on Eastern Parkway."
