Legendary filmmaker stops by San Francisco record store
"It was a straight guy, and he told me, 'I just want to sit on your lap and take a picture of it and give it to my mother for Christmas.' I always had really good experiences at Amoeba Records. So I'm happy to be back."
"Waters, 79, is the latest household name to appear in the popular YouTube series, which is filmed at one of Amoeba Music's three stores in Hollywood, Berkeley or San Francisco, with each episode exploring a different artist's or band's tastes."
"I've been doing this all day while my friends have been shoplifting. I feel like I'm on 'Supermarket Sweep.'"
John Waters, the 79-year-old legendary filmmaker known for cult classics like "Pink Flamingos" and "Hairspray," recently appeared in Amoeba Records' popular "What's in my Bag?" YouTube series. This marked his first visit to the San Francisco location since 2007, when he promoted his Valentine's Day show vinyl release. Waters fondly recalled a humorous encounter with a nude fan requesting a photo for his mother's Christmas gift. During the episode, Waters showcased his diverse collection including a soundtrack from a critically panned film, a calendar featuring a killer doll, and a CD from a Bay Area rock band he hopes to see reunited at his annual Mosswood Meltdown punk festival in Oakland. The appearance coincided with a screening of his 1994 film "Serial Mom" at the Castro Theatre.
