Joshua Henry will reprise his role as Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in a Broadway revival of 'Ragtime', moving from City Center Encores! to the Lincoln Center Theater this fall. The production, led by director Lear deBessonet, features a strong cast alongside Henry, who has been notably praised for his performance. Previews start on September 26, with the official opening on October 16. The collaboration involves a book by Terrence McNally and a score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, ensuring a dedicated tribute to E.L. Doctorow's original story.
Henry's Coalhouse is pure, earnest intensity. He sings like he's pumping oxygen over embers deep in his chest.
Well beyond absorbing the aspirations and travails of the character created by E.L. Doctorow for the 1975 novel, he seems to have become the novel itself.
Ragtime feels like the perfect way to begin my tenure as Artistic Director of this very sacred place.
As we celebrate the legacy of LCT, it is important for us to continue to be inspired by the sublime possibilities of theater.
