Under the overpass in Madureira, Rio, a lively dance party known as Baile Charme attracts thousands of participants every Saturday night. Founded by choreographer Eduardo Goncalves, this event celebrates Afro-Brazilian culture with vibrant R&B music, showcasing the neighborhood's rich heritage which is often overshadowed by samba and funk. Since its inception in 1994, the Baile Charme has grown to become the largest of its kind, even being declared UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The area is adorned with meaningful graffiti, reflecting icons of Black culture and community pride.
"Up to 5,000 people come to dance here every weekend, since 1994," Eduardo tells me.
The Baile Charme under the bridge in Madureira is not only the oldest, but also the largest dance party of its kind.
