The immersive theater production "Sleep No More" has officially concluded its run at the McKittrick Hotel after over a decade. Initially scheduled to close in 2024, overwhelming demand led to an earlier finale. However, the show's producers face significant financial repercussions, having been ordered by a New York judge to pay approximately $5 million in unpaid rent and legal fees to their landlord, Centaur Properties. This ruling follows a complex legal dispute that included multiple lawsuits and claims of coercion regarding lease agreements.
According to court filings, Centaur Properties apparently forgave more than $5 million in rent during the COVID-19 pandemic - an effort to give the show financial breathing room.
This was not an eviction case, because they left about a month ago - voluntarily left, without tendering the rent, Terrence Oved said.
The decision follows more than a year of increasingly bitter legal entanglements between the two parties, culminating in four separate lawsuits and a courtroom showdown.
While slated to close in 2024, popular demand kept the production around another year.
