Al Griffin, owner of Placerville Public House, noted, "I get regulars and locals who come in and tell me old stories about the mines... I feel like in a lot of ways, I'm the keeper of this history."
Placerville's plaque describes the city, "This city in the days of '49 was called 'Hangtown,'... where vigilantes executed many men for various crimes."
Walking down Placerville's Main Street gives an unmistakable sense of stepping into the past, with one of the best-preserved historic downtowns in California.
The building that housed the Hangman's Tree is now home to Placerville Public House, where locals share their rich history with visitors.
