Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has announced plans to officially rename the New York strip steak to "Texas strip" in an effort to enhance the branding of Texas beef. This initiative stems from a desire to reclaim culinary recognition, as the strip steak's name originates from Delmonico's Restaurant in NYC, which first offered the cut in the 19th century. Patrick believes that changing the name will significantly benefit Texas's cattle industry. This proposal has sparked responses from New Yorkers who emphasize their city's historical culinary significance.
Just because a New York restaurant named Texas beef a New York Strip in the 19th century doesn't mean we need to keep doing that. We're asking restaurants to change the name of this cut.
Delmonico's pioneered these cuts of steak, which are still found on menus and in butcher shops across the U.S. The name pays homage to a culinary tradition.
