Temperature check: How the MTA keeps subways cool when the heat is on
Briefly

As temperatures soared in New York City, the MTA demonstrated their efforts to keep subway trains cool for commuters at South Ferry station. With highs reaching into the 90s and forecasted to top 100, maintenance workers used temperature guns to monitor air conditions inside trains. If temperatures hit 80 degrees, trains are taken out of service for repairs to the air conditioning system. The target temperature for comfort is around 73 degrees, and strategies are in place to minimize delays, encouraging commuters to use cooler cars if necessary.
At the end of the day, we'll send that train to a maintenance facility so they can make the proper repair. We try to avoid delays.
Using a nifty temperature gun, MTA workers recorded how hot or cold the air was inside the train car. Workers aim for a comfortable 73 degrees.
