NYC restaurant owners express concern over potential tariffs on European wines and spirits, fearing drastic financial impact. President Trump has proposed a massive 200% duty in response to the EU's planned 50% tax on American whisky. This trade issue poses a particular threat to newer establishments like Boni & Mott, which rely heavily on wine sales. Chef Eric Ripert anticipates a more manageable tariff of approximately 20% to 25%. Uncertainty surrounding these tariffs leaves the restaurant industry facing tough implications for their bottom lines.
"Restaurants rely on selling booze. If the tariffs go up, it will put us out of business," Mokrani said.
"I think there will be a tariff, but not 200%. The last time Trump was in power we had a 25% tax on wines... a tariff in that range isn't good for the importers or us or the clients, but it's manageable - unlike 200%," Ripert said.
