I Gave My Friend Money at His Father's Funeral. I Can't Believe What He Spent It On.
Briefly

Once in a while, someone passed along a check to help the family cover expenses. Still, I'm baffled as to why you think there's something wrong with the family using it to defray costs rather than donate it to a charitable organization.
Funerals can be extremely expensive. Cremation, burial plots, mausoleums, monuments, and headstones each cost several thousand dollars. Then there's food, clergy, and actually opening the grave.
The societal expectation regarding memorial donations can create confusion. While many see it as an opportunity to donate to a charity, families often face immense financial pressure during these times.
It might be beneficial to consider each family's unique circumstances, rather than imposing our expectations. Being empathetic to their decision could foster a supportive dialogue.
