Sal y Lima is a newly opened Mexican restaurant in Rockaway, known for its tacos and tequila. Owner Erik McManus, a Rockaway native, sought to provide an alternative to typical burger and beer joints. Previously managing a different establishment, he pivoted after COVID to create a vibrant year-round dining destination. The decor features a Boho beach aesthetic, incorporating elements like straw lanterns and floral murals. This opening coincides with the growing popularity of Rockaway Beach, which has seen a rise in casual dining options since Hurricane Sandy.
"What we have a lot of here are more of a burger and beer joints, and I felt this was a time to add something to the mix," says Sal y Lima owner Erik McManus.
"I went full force with the idea of a Mexican restaurant with great cocktails," he says. "There was nothing open year-round like this."
Located just a few blocks from the A train, Sal y Lima feels like a Tulum fever dream, lit with dozens of straw lanterns, painted with deep blue walls blazed with floral murals.
The Rockaways' rise in popularity since Hurricane Sandy has been impressive, buoyed by the Rockaway Hotel and a roster of casual sand-in-your-toes seasonal spots.
