Many non-American visitors, including Brits and Germans, shared their prior misconceptions about the United States which often revolved around food quality and hospitality. While expecting delicious, high-quality food based on TV shows like 'Man v. Food', several found their dining experiences average or poor. Complaints included old produce and low-quality meat. Conversely, experiences in New York shattered preconceived notions about rudeness; visitors reported that New Yorkers were exceptionally friendly and helpful, creating a warm experience that was unexpected in a large city.
The food. As a Brit, I watched Man v. Food for years and expected amazing food in the US, but found it average to poor quality.
That the food in the US was going to be delicious, but the reality was disappointing, with old produce and poor quality meat.
I was afraid of NY initially, but my 14 days there were wonderful; people were surprisingly friendly and helpful in a big city.
Compared to my experiences in a normal German town, New Yorkers were incredibly nice, going out of their way to help me.
