The Trump administration is reportedly intensifying its scrutiny of amyl nitrite, commonly known as poppers, which are used recreationally and as sexual aids. A company known as Double Scorpio announced it ceased operations after a raid by the FDA, with suspicions that other producers faced similar actions. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., recently appointed health czar, has wrongly claimed that poppers, rather than HIV, cause AIDS, potentially influencing this crackdown. Despite the actions, the FDA has not confirmed any investigations nor clarified the legal basis for the raids.
Thus far, neither the FDA nor its parent agency has issued any public confirmation about the alleged crackdown.
In a March 13 statement, the poppers brand Double Scorpio announced that it "has stopped all operations following a search and seizure at our offices" by the FDA.
