On its 100th anniversary, Rescue Company 2 of FDNY celebrated a century of bravery and expertise in firefighting. Founded in 1925, the unit has a storied history, with only about 400 members over the years and a record of 12 line-of-duty fatalities. Originally stationed on Carlton Avenue, they now operate from Sterling Place in Ocean Hill. Known for taking on the toughest emergencies across several boroughs, they continue to embody the mission of rescuing civilians and firefighters in peril, as honored by stories shared during the celebration.
"When I was a young firefighter at Engine Company 238 in Williamsburg, we were assigned as the extra engine. I saw Rescue 2 roll up. I saw Jack Kleehaas walk out of the bread box, Ray Downey get out of the officer's seat with this look of 'been there, done that before.'"
"It is mind-boggling how many legends walked through these doors. This may go down as one of the most epic occasions in Fire Department history, with Rescue 2 leading the way."
