Smithsonian National Museum of African Art abruptly postpones LGBTQ+ exhibit
Briefly

The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art has postponed its exhibition "Here: Pride and Belonging in African Art," originally planned to coincide with WorldPride. Museum officials cite budget constraints as the reason, dismissing links to federal funding bans. The opening date, once set for late May, has shifted to early winter 2026. Artwork was already arranged for display, while the exhibition aims to showcase LGBTQ+ African artists’ diverse identities in what would be a significant cultural event, now reduced to a shorter exhibition period.
This exhibition was on a very ambitious schedule to meet WorldPride and we did not have enough time to secure all the private sector funds we had hoped to due to shifts in the fundraising environment.
Artists across Africa and the diaspora whose artworks connect to their identities and experiences as LGBTQ+ people are featured as the first continental and diasporic survey of its scale and scope outside of Africa.
