Sister Says Brooklyn Trans Woman Eryka Caldwell Hid From Alleged Murderer in Domestic Violence Shelters
Caldwell’s sister said Caldwell’s relationship with Jonathan Fernandez had previously involved domestic violence and led Caldwell to seek help in shelters. The sister described multiple arrests and incidents involving Fernandez, including allegations of robbery, burglary, theft of service, and an alleged assault of Caldwell in 2024. She said police had responded to domestic dispute calls between them and that there were additional incidents after an initial arrest. She said Caldwell did not confide in her family about the abuse and stayed in shelters, including after Fernandez’s arrest. Caldwell was stabbed to death in her Bushwick apartment, and Fernandez was arrested at the scene and later arraigned on murder and weapon charges.
"He was arrested in January, and then it was two more incidents. I don't know if he was arrested for them, but I know it was two more incidents where police had to come to the scene and it was domestic violence."
"When it came to her relationships, if it was abusive or anything, she didn't allow me to know. I just wish she would have reached out for help or told somebody in code or something. Like, what was going on, so she could have gotten the help or somebody could have come down there."
"He did not get locked up. They moved her to two different shelters. After he got arrested, he still found her, I don't know how that went."
"Caldwell yelled for help while she was being stabbed, according to prosecutors. Police climbed in through a wind"
