Sidewalk bus-loading platforms get upgraded to help visually impaired commuters in NYC
Briefly

In Manhattan, new warning strips have been installed at 17 bus stops to enhance safety for visually impaired passengers. This initiative, led by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) in collaboration with the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), stems from a long-standing discussion to improve accessibility at bus-loading platforms. The strips, featuring high-visibility white-edge markings with raised tactile domes, aim to prevent falls into the street by alerting users when they’re nearing the platform edge, addressing previous design shortcomings.
With the boarding edge on either side of the platform, we thought that was important for folks as they are gathering at the stop, said Christopher Schuyler.
These bus-loading platforms are an innovative product design that allow a bus to pull up smoothly, but accessibility for visually impaired passengers was lacking initially.
