SantaCon founder nabbed for allegedly spending charity donations on lavish NYC lifestyle, vacations
"Pildes promoted SantaCon as an event grounded in charitable giving, but instead of donating the millions of dollars he raised, he ran his own con game."
"He took advantage of New Yorkers' generous holiday spirit to finance his lifestyle through personal expenses, big and small. No matter how you dress it up, fraud is fraud."
Stefan Pildes, founder of SantaCon, is accused of diverting over a million dollars from charity funds to support his lavish lifestyle. He allegedly spent money on luxury vacations, high-end meals, and a luxury apartment. SantaCon raised $2.7 million for charity from 2019 to 2024, but Pildes reportedly redirected more than half to a slush fund for personal use, including property renovations and concert tickets. US Attorney Jay Clayton emphasized the fraudulent nature of Pildes' actions, which exploited the holiday spirit of participants.
