In May 2020, Aljo Mrkulic stabbed his partner Christopher Rodriguez over 120 times in their Harlem apartment before setting fires in the kitchen and bedroom. After initially attempting to disable the fire alarm, Mrkulic returned and stabbed Rodriguez multiple times more, ultimately killing him. When police arrived at 4:21 a.m., Mrkulic attacked three responding officers, punching and biting them, grabbing one officer's taser and using it against him. Rodriguez was found dead in the stairwell with severe burns, skull fractures, and other injuries. Mrkulic was convicted in December of second-degree murder, second-degree arson, and three counts of second-degree assault, receiving a sentence of 39 years to life.
