Paul Tazewell made history at the 97th Academy Awards by becoming the first Black man to win the award for Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked. He expressed pride in his achievement and hopes to inspire future Black men in the industry. Tazewell's career includes an Emmy for The Wiz Live! and a Tony for Hamilton, alongside nominations for numerous acclaimed Broadway productions. He credits designer Ruth E. Carter, the first Black woman to win in the category, for paving the way for designers of color.
I've been designing costumes for over 35 years that has been on Broadway and now it's film, he said. There was never a Black male designer who I saw that I could follow and see as an inspiration.
This is my first win. I'm the first Black man to receive the costume design award, he said in his acceptance speech, which was met with a couple standing ovations.
