New York man faces hate crime charges over alleged subway attack
A New York City man was indicted on hate crime charges after prosecutors alleged he attacked another man in a Harlem subway station while shouting anti-gay slurs. Prosecutors said the 26-year-old suspect punched the victim multiple times after both men exited the A train near 125th Street and Eighth Avenue on 29 December 2023. Authorities reported repeated homophobic slurs during the assault and said the victim suffered facial injuries requiring hospital treatment. The attack ended only after a bystander intervened and separated the men. The investigation remained open for more than two years before the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force identified the suspect and arrested him in February. The indictment includes third-degree assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment, and officials urged reporting of hate crimes.
"As alleged, Tavaughn Thompson targeted a stranger because of their perceived sexual orientation in an unprovoked, bias-motivated attack. Thompson has been indicted on two counts of third-degree assault as a hate crime and one count of aggravated harassment."
