MTA Bids Adieu to The MetroCard
Briefly

The MTA announced that MetroCard sales will cease on December 31, 2025, marking the transition to the OMNY contactless payment system. Although MetroCards will be accepted until 2026, the new tap-and-go system is designed to enhance convenience for riders, with support from broader technological updates. Current MetroCard users can eventually transfer balances to OMNY systems and will still find physical cards available for purchase. MTA emphasizes the upcoming improvements, including new discount opportunities tied to the OMNY system's use.
"After 32 years, it's time to say goodbye to the MetroCard and go all in on the fare payment system of the future," said MTA Chair Janno Lieber.
"Tap-and-go - already the choice for 65% of our riders - is not only easier and more convenient to use, it also opens the door for new discounts and promotions that'll put money back in riders' pockets."
