A fire at Grand Central Madison on Tuesday injured four individuals and disrupted Long Island Rail Road service for around six hours. Firefighters responded to an electrical blaze, locating the fire in a traction power substation. Over 100 firefighters battled heavy smoke, extinguishing the two-alarm fire before noon. Fortunately, only minor injuries were reported among a civilian and three firefighters. The MTA stated the cause was being investigated, with service interruptions resulting in trains being canceled or rerouted. However, normal operations were expected to resume for the evening and following morning commutes.
MTA spokesman Tim Minton said later: "While the investigation into cause is in its early stages, this appears to be an equipment issue limited to a small area inside the station complex that caused limited service disruption."
Firefighters located the fire after cutting a roll-down gate. Three firefighters and one civilian were treated for minor injuries, Tucker said, adding, "We're grateful no one was seriously injured."
