Jonathan van Ness says queer visibility no longer 'the answer'
Briefly

In a recent podcast, Jonathan van Ness of Queer Eye fame argued that merely increasing queer visibility is insufficient to combat bigotry and discrimination. Reflecting on the implications of Donald Trump's presidency, which saw a rollback of LGBTQ+ rights, van Ness emphasized that representation does not equate to safety or equality. They expressed feelings of increased vulnerability and concern over rising anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in their home state of Texas, reiterating the need for substantial action rather than superficial visibility efforts to create real change for the queer community.
I think it's very clear that queer visibility isn't the answer because if it was the answer, we wouldn't have Donald Trump in the presidency.
So often I have heard people use Queer Eyes or other queer representation as a barometer for the health of queer people or our community at large, we clearly can see that this isn't the case.
It's just violence, period. It's weird but I still do love America. I just wish we could get it the f**k together.
I went there for Queer Eyes in season six, and my husband and I decided to stay but it's gotten worse even.
