A federal immigration judge dismissed the asylum case of Andry Hernández Romero, a gay Venezuelan deported to a notorious Salvadoran prison by the Trump administration. This dismissal is part of a worrying trend impacting numerous Venezuelan asylum seekers sent to El Salvador under the Alien Enemies Act. Advocates, including Linday Toczylowski from the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, express concern that the government is effectively erasing the asylum-seeking processes. Hernández's secret deportation, during which he cried for help, raises grave concerns about his safety and access to legal avenues for refuge.
"It seems the government's intention is to complete the disappearance of people to El Salvador," Lindsay Toczylowski, executive director of Immigrant Defenders Law Center, told NBC.
"They're dismissing this proceeding that exists in the United States while providing absolutely no transparency regarding the plight of the people they deported to CECOT," Toczylowski added.
