High school student group holds sexual violence vigil, calls for Cambridge councilor to resign
Briefly

A student group from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School organized a vigil to protest Councilor Paul Toner's refusal to resign after being charged with involvement in a brothel ring. The vigil, supported by advocacy organizations, aimed to raise awareness for survivors of sexual violence. Student representatives, including Madeline Nohrnberg, emphasized the importance of accountability and the impact of Toner's actions on vulnerable individuals. Despite Toner's charge admission, he stated he would not resign, which sparked significant community discussions on accountability and survivors' rights.
Procuring sex is not a private matter; it is a crime that often involves the exploitation of vulnerable people. Taking accountability does not mean apologizing to the people who you care most about.
Thank you to all who joined us yesterday at the vigil for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. It was powerful to witness our community come together.
I’m ashamed to have my name associated with this case, and I do not contest the statements that are being circulated in the community.
TIAA shared an open statement calling for Toner's resignation and encouraging the community to speak out against sexual violence and stand up for survivors.
