Elliot Page's queer nature documentary gets first teaser
"Did you know that clownfish change sex from male to female? (So if Nemo's mom had died in real life, his dad would have become his mom!) Did you know that albatross, penguins and swans parent in same sex pairs? Or that bonobos, who are just as closely related to us as chimps, are matriarchal and have same-sex sex every day?!"
""disproves many lies we've been told about our nature - and thankfully, the truth is so much better!""
"Exploring 1500+ species who create matriarchies, engage in same-sex sex and parenting, and change sex, @secondnaturedoc proves there's nothing "inferior" about females and nothing "unnatural" about being queer."
Second Nature examines gender and sexuality across more than 1,500 animal species, documenting matriarchies, same-sex mating and parenting, and sex change. The film presents examples including clownfish sex changes, same-sex parenting among albatross, penguins and swans, and daily same-sex behavior and matriarchal structure among bonobos. The production highlights contributions from scientists such as Dr. Joan Roughgarden and Dr. Joseph Graves and features female, BIPOC, queer and immigrant researchers. The film challenges narratives that portray female inferiority or queerness as unnatural. Second Nature premieres at the New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival on October 18.
