Did a hitman kill a New York gallerist? Art world rocked by murder-for-hire trial
"The gallery, now named Sikkema Malloy Jenkins, became known for representing artists from a diverse range of backgrounds before many other gallerists prioritized diversity. The gallery also represented Jeffrey Gibson as the first Indigenous artist to represent the US solo at the Venice Biennale art show. Prevez's alleged confession set off a chain of events that culminated with Daniel Sikkema's murder-for-hire trial in Manhattan federal court last week."
A hitman allegedly entered Brent Sikkema’s Rio de Janeiro townhouse early on 14 January 2024 and went to his upstairs bedroom with a kitchen knife. An altercation occurred near the bedroom door as Sikkema, 75, struggled for his life. The assailant allegedly stabbed Sikkema repeatedly, driving the knife into his body and face a total of 18 times. The assailant then allegedly covered Sikkema’s body with a pillow and blanket before leaving. Brazilian authorities arrested the suspect about four days later. Within two weeks, the suspect allegedly admitted that Sikkema’s estranged husband, Daniel, had plotted the killing. The case later led to a murder-for-hire trial and related civil litigation.
