The 90th anniversary celebration of Frederick Douglass Memorial Park featured a commemorative plaque unveiling and commemorated the site's recent designation as a NYC landmark. The event drew a diverse group, including local officials and veterans, reflecting on the park's historical significance. Speeches acknowledged the struggles faced to preserve the site, once threatened by neglect, and highlighted notable figures interred there, such as civil rights leaders and cultural icons. Board member Lynn Cuffee emphasized the importance of remembering these stories as integral to understanding the community's history.
We have not reached this moment without struggle. We have weathered storms, financial hardship, neglect and moments where our very survival was in question. And yet, we are still here.
They are all here. Their stories etched in stone at this sacred site, this lesser-known chapter of Black history, play a vital role in defining our community.
